Uganda Strengthens Global Air Connectivity at ICAO Air Services Negotiation Event 2024

Uganda participated in the ICAO Air Services Negotiation Event (ICAN) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 21 to 25, 2024. The Ugandan delegation, led by UCAA’s Deputy Director General, Mrs. Olive Birungi Lumonya, included officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport, Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, and Uganda Airlines.

ICAN is an annual global event organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), focusing on Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) negotiations and consultations between states regarding air services.

At this year’s event, Uganda successfully concluded new BASAs, reviewed existing BASAs, and signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). BASA negotiations were held with Latvia (new), the United Kingdom (review), Qatar (review), The Sudan (new), and Ethiopia (review). Additionally, bilateral consultations took place with India, Botswana, Russia (new), and Malaysia (new). Notably, Uganda signed a BASA with Oman, further enhancing its international air service agreements.

Uganda’s participation in ICAN 2024 highlights its commitment to improving air connectivity and fostering international partnerships, paving the way for enhanced trade, tourism, and economic development.
