Maj Gen Takirwa Urges UPDF Troops to Uphold Discipline and Integrity in Somalia Deployment

Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, Deputy Commander of Land Forces, has called on Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel to uphold discipline and preserve the army’s reputation while on duty in Somalia.

“Discipline, dedication, and safeguarding the UPDF’s integrity will ensure your success on this mission,” Maj Gen Takirwa stated during the send-off ceremony for Battle Group 43 and United Nations Guard Unit 11. These units are set to be deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre in Singo, Nakaseke District.

He underscored the necessity of proper behavior and collaboration with local communities for the mission’s success.

“Honor Somali traditions,” he advised the soldiers, warning them against causing further hardship for the local population.

Maj Gen Takirwa also encouraged mutual respect among the troops throughout their deployment. Representing the Commandant, Col Julius Nyendwoha, Chief Instructor at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSTC) Singo, expressed confidence in their preparedness.

“I am certain that the training objectives have been met and that you are well-equipped for the mission ahead,” Col Nyendwoha affirmed.

He further noted that the training was delivered by UPDF instructors with guidance and support from international collaborators, including the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI).
