Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has called for concrete regional action to advance women’s digital empowerment across East Africa, saying the outcomes of the 2nd East African Community Women’s Intergenerational Dialogue must move beyond discussions and be implemented through regional institutions.
Speaking during the dialogue, Kadaga said the recommendations generated by participants would be presented to the East African Community Sectoral Council and, where necessary, elevated to the Council of Ministers and the Summit of Heads of State to ensure meaningful implementation.
She noted that women are increasingly driving innovation and economic transformation across the region, but continue to face barriers in accessing technology, digital infrastructure, mentorship, financing, and global networks. According to Kadaga, addressing these challenges is critical to unlocking the full potential of women entrepreneurs, professionals, and innovators.
Kadaga further emphasized that technology is no longer optional but essential for inclusive development, calling for greater investment in digital literacy, innovation hubs, and mentorship programmes that equip women and girls with skills for the digital economy.
She also urged governments, development partners, academic institutions, and the private sector to strengthen regional platforms that promote networking, knowledge sharing, innovation, and leadership among women. In addition, she encouraged East Africa to learn from successful initiatives across the continent that have empowered women in science, technology, and digital innovation.
Highlighting the role of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, Kadaga said digital transformation must create opportunities for women while remaining inclusive and responsive to gender needs.
Concluding her remarks, she called for sustained investment in women and girls, stressing that empowering women through technology, mentorship, and innovation is not only a matter of equality but also a strategic investment in East Africa’s future prosperity.
