State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has held high-level talks with Commonwealth Sport leaders in London. The talks focused on preparations for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and the future direction of the multi-sport event.
Minister Ogwang, accompanied by National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr. Bernard Ogwel, met Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare and Chief Executive Officer Katie Sadleir at the organization’s headquarters in Westminster.
Among the key issues discussed was a proposal for Africa to host the Commonwealth Games for the first time through a multi-nation hosting model. The concept would see several neighbouring countries jointly stage the Games, similar to the approach adopted for the FIFA World Cup and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Minister Ogwang welcomed the discussions, saying they present an opportunity to expand the reach of the Commonwealth Games.
“We have had productive engagements on the future of the Commonwealth Games, including innovative hosting models that could open the door for Africa to host this prestigious event. Uganda remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen sport across the Commonwealth,” Ogwang said.
Commonwealth Sport Chief Executive Officer Katie Sadleir said the organization is committed to ensuring the Games remain sustainable while expanding opportunities for all member nations.
“Our focus is on building a sustainable and inclusive Commonwealth Games movement that continues to inspire athletes and communities across all 74 nations and territories,” she said.
With less than two weeks before the opening ceremony in Glasgow, Dr. Rukare briefed the Ugandan delegation on the final preparations and expressed confidence in the hosts’ readiness.
Minister Ogwang also expressed confidence in Team Uganda’s prospects, noting that government support remains strong.
“Our athletes are well prepared, and government will continue to motivate them through performance-based incentives, including bonuses for medal winners and monthly remuneration. We are optimistic they will proudly represent Uganda in Glasgow,” he said.
