The Government of Uganda has today launched Phase V of the National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) in Kanungu District, marking a major milestone in expanding high-speed fibre connectivity and digital transformation across the country.
The launch was presided over by the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, alongside the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, and the Executive Director of the National Information Technology Authority–Uganda (NITA-U), Dr. Hatwib Mugasa.
Phase V of the NBI will connect 20 government agencies and strategic institutions in Kanungu, including Kanungu Police, Nyakatare Technical Institute, Kanungu Town Council, Kihihi Health Centre, among others. The expansion will provide reliable high-speed internet, enhance access to digital public services, reduce communication costs, and boost socio-economic development.
Speaking at the launch, officials emphasized that the extension of the backbone to Kanungu is expected to stimulate digital inclusion, create employment opportunities, and strengthen service delivery across sectors such as health, education, security, and local government.
With this new development, Kanungu District joins the growing network of regions benefiting from Uganda’s national fibre grid, paving the way for innovation and improved government efficiency.
