Makerere University and Lancashire University School of Veterinary Medicine have signed letters of intent to collaborate on joint research projects at the Masters and PhD levels.

The partnership aims to leverage the strengths of both institutions in addressing pressing animal health issues, including emerging and re-emerging diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and animal welfare.

After the signing of the letter of intent, the team from Lancashire University visited the Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where they explored potential research collaboration opportunities.

The sanctuary, located on an island in Lake Victoria, provides a unique setting for studying primate behavior, conservation, and welfare.

“We were impressed by the great potential for research collaboration projects with Makerere and other partners such as Ngamba,” said Prof. Heather Bacon Dean of the school of Veterinary Medicine Lancashire University . “This partnership aligns with our shared goals of advancing veterinary medicine and improving animal health.”

The collaboration is part of Makerere University’s 10-year plan to become a leading institution in applied research, driving economic growth and development on the African continent. “This partnership scores high on our strategic goals,” said Prof. Frank Asiimwe of Makerere University. “We look forward to impactful research outcomes that benefit both humans and animals.”

The Memorandum of Understanding is set to be signed at Lancashire University in April 2026.
