Residents of Bukedea District have today turned up in large numbers for the much-anticipated free eye camp that has kicked off at Anita Foundation Teaching Hospital, bringing hope to thousands suffering from eye-related conditions.

The three-day medical outreach, spearheaded by local leaders, is aimed at restoring sight and improving access to specialized eye care services within the community.

The Bukedea County Member of Parliament elect Hon. Beecham Okwere rallied residents to take full advantage of the opportunity, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

โ€œI call upon all our people to come in big numbers and benefit from these free services. This is a rare opportunity to have specialists right here at home to restore sight and improve lives,โ€ the MP elect said.

According to the Doctor in charge, Dr. Ongala Emmanuel, the medical team is fully prepared to handle the overwhelming turnout, with an ambitious target of treating over 3,000 patients during the outreach.

โ€œWe are well prepared for this exercise. We expect to treat more than 3,000 patients, out of which 300 will undergo surgery, including 50 children. Our team is committed to ensuring successful outcomes,โ€ Dr. Ongala noted.

Hospital administrator Mugena Agnes assured the public that all necessary arrangements have been put in place to facilitate smooth operations throughout the camp.

โ€œWe have organized accommodation and meals for patients coming from far distances to ensure they are comfortable throughout the treatment period,โ€ Mugena explained.

Residents who spoke to this reporter expressed gratitude for the initiative, commending the Speaker and area leaders for bringing vital healthcare services closer to the grassroots.

โ€œThis is a blessing to us. Many people here cannot afford eye treatment, but now we have a chance to be treated for free,โ€ said Amos Opolot a resident.

โ€œWe thank our leaders for remembering us. This will change many lives,โ€ added Stella Akwi

The eye camp will run for three days, offering free screening, treatment, and surgeries, with medical experts urging the public not to miss this opportunity.
