Commemorating 25 Years of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s Legacy with a Pilgrimage to Butiama

Each year on the 14th of October, the United Republic of Tanzania marks Nyerere Day to honor Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the Father of the Nation. On Monday, October 14th, 2024, we will commemorate 25 years since Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s passing and the revival of the East African Community (EAC) following the signing of the Treaty for its establishment by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Benjamin Mkapa of Tanzania, and Daniel arap Moi of Kenya. Afrika Mashariki Fest has organized a Pilgrimage to Butiama in the Mara region, Nyerere’s ancestral home and resting ground. The theme is: “Espousing Mwalimu Nyerere’s Enduring Legacy and Values – Lessons for Mother Africa.” This initiative reflects our conviction that the journey to Mwalimu’s sainthood has heritage, and we will explore it together.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has repeatedly emphasized the significance of Mwalimu Nyerere’s invaluable contribution to Africa’s liberation and his efforts to integrate the original East African countries, including his offer to delay Tanganyika’s independence to form a strong, united country with Kenya and Uganda. We believe that a deeper reflection on Mwalimu Nyerere is essential to refocus our understanding and tackle the challenges facing Africa today. Afrika Mashariki Fest has arranged for a delegation of Ugandans and East Africans, including political leaders, students, private sector actors, religious leaders, security officers, cultural leaders, and other citizens, to undertake a pilgrimage to Butiama.
