Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the role of women in the energy sector, with a renewed focus on inclusivity, innovation, and sustainable growth.
Speaking at the Women in Energy Forum 2026, the Chief Executive Officer of the Electricity Regulatory Authority, Ziria Tibalwa Waako, highlighted the progress made in empowering women and girls to take up careers in the traditionally male-dominated field.
Over the past eight years, the Women in Energy Initiative has grown into a transformative platform, reaching more than 50,000 students across 78 secondary schools nationwide. The initiative has played a key role in inspiring young girls to pursue careers in energy while challenging long-standing stereotypes.
The forum emphasized that women are not only beneficiaries of energy access but also critical drivers of innovation, sustainability, and inclusive development within the sector.
“Inclusivity is not optional it is essential for equitable growth, empowered communities, and long-term sustainability,” Tibalwa Waako said.
Government, through its institutions and partners, continues to strengthen policies and programmes aimed at expanding opportunities for women and girls. Officials say these efforts are intended to ensure that women are fully equipped to lead, innovate, and shape the future of Uganda’s energy sector.
The Women in Energy Forum serves as a platform to promote gender inclusion and collaboration, as Uganda works towards building a more resilient and inclusive energy future.
