The NRM Secretary General, Rt Hon Richard Todwong, has urged grassroots leaders to champion the economic upliftment of their communities by actively sensitizing the public and motivating them to participate in income-generating ventures.
Speaking at a thanksgiving event hosted by Lamwo District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Achora Nancy Odonga, on Sunday in Padibe Town Council, Lamwo District, Todwong emphasized that leadership should go beyond mere talk and translate into tangible efforts that elevate people’s livelihoods.
“We need to acquire skills and venture into business and income-creating activities. Leaders should take the initiative to educate and motivate communities to embrace entrepreneurship,” Todwong remarked.
He further noted that while the government continues to invest in critical infrastructure such as roads and electricity, it is up to the citizens to harness these developments to improve their economic wellbeing.
“You love the NRM and the party values you too, but political loyalty alone won’t feed you. The party may build a road, but it’s your responsibility to utilize that road to better your life. This main road leading to the Sudan border, for example, is a great business opportunity,” he added.
On the issue of party membership, Todwong reiterated that the NRM stands for unity and inclusiveness, and he encouraged members to warmly welcome new entrants into the party.
“In NRM, we do not practice discrimination. I urge our longstanding members to receive the newcomers with open arms. Let us not allow the upcoming elections to sow division among us,” the Secretary General emphasized.
Hon. Nancy Acora Odonga, in her remarks, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the people of Lamwo for placing their confidence in her to serve them in Parliament.
“May God bless you, the people of Lamwo. I deeply thank you for trusting me with this leadership responsibility. There is no value I can attach to such trust. It is beyond repayment,” she said. Looking ahead, she called for political maturity and calm as the elections approach: “Let’s promote peace during the campaign season. It is God who determines leaders; our role is simply to do our part ‘moko amoka.’”
Hon. Margaret Lamwaka Odwa, the MP for Chua East Constituency, also conveyed her appreciation to the Secretary General for his role in enabling a Memorandum of Understanding that has fostered cooperation with the NRM.
She further criticized the opposition for allegedly “spreading messages that incite division and hostility among citizens,” and thanked her supporters for their continued loyalty. She encouraged them to “support NRM and President Museveni in the upcoming national elections.”
