The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 5 Infantry Division has handed over confiscated charcoal to families in Lira City, as part of the ongoing campaign to enforce the presidential directive banning commercial charcoal production in Northern Uganda.
The distribution exercise was overseen by the Division Commander, Maj Gen Keith Katungi, following operations conducted in line with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s Executive Order issued on 19 May 2023 in Baralegi Parish, Otuke District. The order stemmed from reports raised by local leaders about extensive environmental destruction linked to illegal charcoal activities.
Since the implementation of the directive, security forces have impounded over 120 trucks carrying charcoal. The seized charcoal had been stored at the Lira Army Barracks for several months, prompting the division leadership, together with Lira Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Egole Lawrence, to redistribute it to vulnerable community households.
Maj Gen Katungi noted that the initiative reinforces the national agenda to rehabilitate the country’s natural resources. “Uganda has lost more than 60% of its forest cover since 1960 due to uncontrolled charcoal trade and deforestation. This operation is aimed at reversing that damage and preserving our environment,” he stated.
RCC Egole commended the UPDF for executing the operation with integrity and for resisting bribery attempts by illegal traders. He cautioned that individuals who defy the ban risk having their vehicles confiscated and auctioned, in addition to being prosecuted.
Officials urged citizens to actively participate in protecting the environment, warning that continued misuse of natural resources contributes significantly to climate change and environmental decline.
