The suspect, identified as Wagaba Hussen, 27, a resident of Kayunga in Wakiso District, was arrested following an attempted robbery in Najjera.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the victim, Nakawomne Deborah, had withdrawn UGX 21 million from a bank in Ntinda and hired a boda boda to return home to Buwaate.
“As she approached the police station opposite Stabex, a speeding motorcycle approached and the passenger grabbed her bag,” Owoyesigyire said. “The victim raised an alarm and nearby officers responded.”
The motorcycle rider managed to escape in the traffic, but the passenger who grabbed the bag was arrested. Police recovered the full amount of UGX 21 million.
The suspect is currently detained at Najjera Police Station as police search for the motorcycle rider who fled the scene.
Police have urged members of the public to remain cautious when carrying large sums of money and to report suspicious activity to the authorities.
