TheNational Drug Authority (NDA), through a special operation has arrested Nsamba Swamad, an Assistant Nursing Officerof Kassanda Health Center IV who has been illegally found with over 100,000 doses of antiretrovirals (ARVs), 15,000 doses of Aspirin and 400 HIV testing kits. Nsamba had hidden these assorted medicines in a pit latrine of a private clinic where he part-times in Bukuya Trading Center, Kassanda.
Nsamba Swamad who is currently in police custody will be presented to Makindye Wildlife and Utilities Court to answer charges of;
1. Illegal possession of government stores contrary to section 296(2) of the Penal Code Act.
2. Illegal possession of classified drugs contrary to section 27(2) of the NDP/A Act.
Since 2019, NDA has been undertaking special operations targeting theft of government drugs for the last 6 years, we have been able to recover government stolen medicine worth over UGX 15 billion and the arrest of more than 62 suspects including, 43 health officials, a solider and a policer officer. These arrests have led to several sentencing including the most recent being that of Kibalya Ronald Nditusawa (a former drug dispenser at Kayunga Hospital) who together with his accomplices were on October 07th sentenced to up to 4 years in prison after NDA arrested them with over 64,800 doses of ARVs stolen from government hospitals.
