Fatal Bugweri Crash Leaves Bus Driver Dead, 15 Injured

Police in Bugweri District are investigating a road crash that killed a bus driver and injured 15 people, including 13 students, along the Mbale–Iganga Highway.

The crash involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UA551ED, and a stationary Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration number UBB 269V.

The bus, owned by Amuria High School, was carrying students from St. Paul Secondary School, Katakwi, who were travelling for a geography study tour.

The driver, Kasakya Abdallah, 68, died at the scene.

Police said the crash happened at about 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in Nawangisa Village, Bugweri District. The bus was carrying 73 students from Mbale to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe when it hit the rear of the stationary trailer.

The injured include 13 students, one teacher and the bus conductor. They were taken to Iganga General Hospital for treatment.

Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said traffic officers, led by the Regional Traffic Officer, visited the scene and opened investigations.

“The deceased’s body has been transported to Iganga General Hospital mortuary, while the injured victims have been rushed to Iganga General Hospital for treatment,” Kasadha said.

The bus and trailer were later towed to Busembatya Police Station for mechanical inspection as investigations continue.

Police have urged motorists to remain alert, especially during early morning travel, and to observe road safety rules.
