Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama has commended voters in Adjumani West Constituency for what he described as a peaceful and orderly parliamentary by-election.
Byabakama made the remarks on Thursday evening following the conclusion of voting, counting and tallying across the constituency’s 114 polling stations. The Electoral Commission had earlier confirmed that 51,437 voters were registered in the constituency. (EC Uganda)
National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate James Leku Pilli was declared the winner with 12,423 votes, while independent candidate Jasper Draga obtained 2,559 votes.
Byabakama said the voting process was characterised by calm and order, commending voters, candidates, polling officials, security personnel and other stakeholders for their conduct during the exercise.
He urged the people of Adjumani West to maintain the spirit of unity beyond the election and work together towards the development of the constituency.
In his victory remarks, Leku thanked voters for entrusting him with the parliamentary mandate and called on his former opponents and their supporters to join efforts to address challenges affecting the constituency.
The Adjumani West seat fell vacant following the death of former MP Gen. Moses Ali in July 2026. The Electoral Commission scheduled the by-election for September 17, following the completion of nominations and campaigns. (EC Uganda)
Leku also paid tribute to the late Gen. Moses Ali, pledging to work towards addressing some of the challenges left unresolved during his tenure.
Meanwhile, NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi and the party’s Director for Mobilisation Dr Rosemary Sseninde attributed Leku’s victory to mobilisation and coordination between the party leadership, local structures and communities.
